Canada Agriculture Day

February 22nd, 2022 is Canada's Agriculture Day! How will you celebrate?

As part of the celebrations, Agriculture in the Classroom Newfoundland and Labrador (AITC-NL) will be hosting a virtual event with St. Mary’s Elementary in St. John’s. Agriculture in the Classroom NL will be providing all students with an interactive presentation and hands-on activity they can complete with AITC-NL through Google Classroom. Students will also receive a lunch bag with a locally prepared lunch made with local ingredients.

Agriculture in the Classroom NL will also be sharing a virtual performance from the JUNO Award winning, The Swinging Belles! The Swinging Belles are a Canadian children's music group from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The band, who perform in a swing jazz style, consists of vocalists Laura Winter and Erin Power, and guitarist Duane Andrews. Teachers can sign up to receive a link for this performance that they can watch in the classroom with their students. Learn more about The Swinging Belles HERE.

Agriculture in the Classroom NL and NL Young Farmers Forum will be partnering to provide high school students with the opportunity to virtually join a panel of four Young Farmers on February 22 at 10:00 a.m. The Young Farmers will share their stories and experiences of their careers in agriculture. This experience will connect students to young farmers in their province that have a passion for the agriculture industry and inform students of the various careers available in the agriculture industry. The panel will also be recorded and available at and AITC-NL’s YouTube channel.

All teachers (Kindergarden-12) throughout the province will also have the opportunity to participate through a Twitter contest. Show us how your class celebrates Canada’s Agriculture Day, and be sure to add the hashtag #CdnAgDay and tag @AITCNL. We encourage all teachers to show us how they celebrate the food we grow here in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Canada.

The participating partnering organizations include:

  • Agriculture in the Classroom Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture

  • Agriculture in the Classroom Canada

  • Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture
