Canada Agriculture Day
February 23rd, 2021 is Canada's Agriculture Day! How did you celebrate?
We celebrated the fifth annual Canada’s Agriculture Day with a virtual celebration!
For the students across Newfoundland and Labrador this was a day to celebrate agriculture in a new and unique way - an online environment!
The main focus of this virtual celebration for Canada’s Agriculture Day 2021 was a new video about the journey of how food gets on our plates. The video takes a look at the food system in Newfoundland and Labrador from the ground up (literally). The video also introduces students to products that are made right in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This video highlights food sustainability and the importance of the Newfoundland and Labrador food system to society. The video also highlights local farmers, a local chef, local products and the importance of supporting local agriculture.
All teachers (Kindergarden-12) throughout the province had the opportunity to participate through a Twitter contest. They showed us how their classes celebrated Canada’s Agriculture Day!
February 11th, 2020 was Canada's Agriculture Day! How did you celebrate?
Last year we celebrated at Stephenville Primary in Stephenville with 350 students! Students explored interactive and educational booths that connected them with agriculture, heathy eating, and local food. Agriculture representatives were there to answer questions and engage students in various activities relating to Newfoundland and Labrador's agriculture industry.
Then students, staff, and guests were provided with lunch prepared by local chef, D'arcy Butler and the culinary students at CNA using local products. Thank you to Chicken Farmers of NL, School Milk Foundation of NL, and Campbellton Berry Farm for supplying product. Students then enjoyed a performance from MusicNL nominee for Music Educator of the Year award, Kacie Callahan.
Special guests were present to help us celebrate the importance of Canadian food:
Scott Reid – Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly
Tom Rose – Mayor of Stephenville
Patricia Edwards – K-6 Program Specialist, NLESD
Wayne Simmons – Vice President of the NL Federation of Agriculture
